Emotionally this chakra governs the feelings of stability, security, survival, passion, guilt, and basic primal needs and emotions.
Physically this chakra governs the bones, lower digestive tract, the immune system and the anus and rules the Sense of Smell!
When out of balance (deficiency) in our root chakra we can feel anxious, indecisive, fearful, impatient, intolerant, and perhaps a bit greedy. One may have troubles connecting with others, struggles with personal finance, and feel tired all the time. Having an overabundance of energy here, as in being overly grounded, we might experience an inability to experience change without difficulty, being very controlling, and having a lack of imagination.
Being out of balance in our root chakra can show up on the physical level as digestive disorders (thing IBS, constipation, hemorrhoids), chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity/weight issues, arthritis, lower back pain or sciatica, frequent colds, foot and knee pain, and depression.
This is obviously an important chakra to clear, charge, and balance in order to feel secure, grounded, and stabile in our daily lives. Most people who complain of anxiety, depression, and stress often comment on feeling "out of control" or "there aren't enough hours in the day" or "life seems to speed by in the blink of an eye." These are symptoms of not being connected to the earth in a physical, emotional, and spiritual way. Feeling yourself connected to the Universe, having both feet anchored below, taking one step at a time while energetically sending "roots" into the earth will help to bring more stability to your life. Taking one step at a time encourages us to be in the here & now. When we feel grounded and stabile we are then able to experience more of life's beauty, seek out and grab opportunities, and feel relationships flourish and grow to new levels.
Exercises to clear, charge, and balance this chakra:
1. Meditate on your root chakra - you can envision your legs, feet, and root of the pelvis as being a bright, rich, and vibrant Red color.....then you can silently pulse the mantra LAM at your base. You can also silently repeat the name of the chakra "Muladhara" (moo-lad-harah)
2. Breath - Inhale down the length of the body to fill up the lower belly and pelvis and exhale down and OUT the legs and feet.
3. Off the mat you can get out into nature and feel your feet connected to the earth. Go hiking, surfing, have a picnic under some trees! Eat organic and grounding foods such as root vegetables, seeds, nuts, etc. Wearing grounding stones such as smoky quartz and black tourmaline are incredibly beautiful as well as very efficient. Essential oils such as patchouli, sandalwood, thyme, and clary sage are a few examples of grounding scents that you can surround yourself with.
